Chopper, convicted for armed robberies, assaults and other violent crimes, was released from prison in and has since reinvented himself as a successful author. AccessEd, the Queensland government body which reviews educational resources, has recommended Hooky the Cripple for secondary schools. The book was based on Aesop's Fables, if someone is pushed so far, they will eventually retaliate, he said.

The book's publishers, Pluto Press, have marketed the work as "a dark and violent tale for our times". Chopper said he and illustrator, Archibald Prize winner Adam Cullen, would destroy political correctness. Chopper dismissed the calls and said the Family Association would think the childrens' story of Humpty Dumpty was a crime against eggs.
