Description For the first time, a color fascimile and translation will be available from this important 15th century master of late Italian Medieval swordsmanship. Master Fillipo Vadi's work, previously overlooked and underestimated by fencing scholars, presents the student of historical swordsmanship or of miltiary history a fresh, stunningly beautiful look into the mind of an Italian fencing master.

Accompanying the exquisitely wrought text, finely translated by Luca Porzio, are 56 color plates showing many of the techniques explained in the chapters and by other historical masters, but in this case, with such a beautiful rendering that they are works of art unto themselves. An absolute must for the bookshelf of anyone interested in the history of fencing or late medieval warfare, this rich volume will also appeal to collectors of illuminated manuscripts, reeactors, and literary traditions of 15th century Italy.

De Arte Gladiatoria Dimicandi (MS Vitt.Em.1324)

The main body of text is largely a redaction of the writings of Fiore de'i Liberi , generally repeating the text of Liberi's Flos Duellatorum ; the layout is likewise very similar to that of his later Florius de Arte Luctandi. It seems almost certain that Vadi stood in the tradition of Liberi, or at the very least possessed a copy of his fencing manual. However, this manuscript cannot be written off as a mere plagiarism of Liberi, as it augments his offering with a lengthy, sixteen chapter introduction that illuminates many of the subtleties of Medieval Italian fencing. Arte Gladiatoria Dimicandi : 15th Century Swordsmanship of Master Filippo Vadi

It consists of an opening prologue describing the art of fencing followed by colored plates illustrating specific techniques for the longsword , dagger , pollaxe , spear and club. While much of what he describes closely follows the work of Fiore dei Liberi , author of Flos Duellatorum , Vadi's work also differs in some respects, including his footwork and several original techniques of his own. Little is known about the author, a native of Pisa , other than that he appears to have been a mid to late 15th-century fencing master linked in some way to the tradition of Fiore dei Liberi and that he dedicated a fencing book to the Dukes of Urbino , in the last quarter of the 15th century. However, a man of the same name appears as a governor of Reggio under the Estense family in the mid- to late 15th century. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
