The podcast series, used as a revision aid for the Primary FRCA, have been available to download from the Internet for a number of years. For those readers not familiar with them, they are a series of 90 short podcasts covering various topics focusing on preparation for the structured viva part of the Primary FRCA.

The authors have taken the next step in publishing this book, which contains all the podcasts in a printed format. The book is laid out in a logical manner with three sections, the first on physiology, the second pharmacology, and the final section being physics. An index is included at the end of the book. Each chapter is presented as a series of questions with accompanying answers.

The number of questions contained within each chapter does vary, but each topic is quite comprehensively covered. The answers are clearly written and contain a lot of concise information.

Many of the chapters have useful and relevant diagrams complementing the text. The original podcast series was described as being ideal for those long journeys to work.

This text is the same, but can just as easily be read in theatres or between lists, each chapter taking only 10 or 15 min to read through. As an examiner, this book particularly impresses me. The style and format of the questions is typical of that seen in the SOE part of the exam. Each topic starts with a short, concise lead-in question. Subsequent questions and answers explore the topic in a logical manner both in terms of depth and breadth of knowledge. The answers are a fair reflection of the standard expected of the candidates when taking part in the primary examination.

I have no doubt that this book will prove itself to be very useful to a number of different groups. First, I would strongly recommend it to all candidates who are preparing for the viva examination. Having worked for and having passed the MCQ paper, it is often difficult to change the focus of study and revision for the viva part of the exam. This book will give candidates an accurate insight and feel as to what to expect. Equally important, it should serve to reassure the candidates as to the lack of obscure or esoteric questions—there are few, if any, contained in this book and the actual exam is the same.

Secondly, any anaesthetist, consultant or trainee, tasked with helping with viva practice for candidates can confidently pick up and use this book at short notice and start asking questions without the need for frantic preparation.

Finally, as an examiner myself I have certainly made use of this book when trying to refresh my knowledge of particular topics during the exam week at the College. I am confident that many of my colleagues will do the same. I only have a relatively minor criticism of this book. This is not so much a criticism as a warning to candidates. Although I am very impressed with this book, I would emphasize to candidates that a text of this size cannot be expected to cover the entire syllabus, it does not.

Likewise, candidates should appreciate that examiners will ask questions not included within the text. It would be wrong of candidates to use this as there sole text in preparation for the viva exam. This criticism aside, I would strongly recommend the purchase of this revision book, whether the reader is an exam candidate, an organizer of viva practice, or perhaps even an examiner.
